These papers called Thoughts started in 2004 with Gerald's independent Quaker work in Latvia and Lithuania responding to spiritual enquiry. Communism had left a spiritual deficit in the lives of people who were expected to be materially productive and to lead materially useful lives. For example, one elderly man had been a plumber all his working life but at heart he was a philosopher and he had a pile of Notepads reflecting his philosophic thinking. A spiritually-beautiful woman had taken a degree in mathematics because she was expected to do something materially useful with her life. So, short one-page Thoughts in clear English were born.
